The Free Money Advice Service has been setup by the government to provide impartial advice on most financial matters but is particularly good on Equity Release.

Equity Release is a minefield but a necessary minefield! Get it right and older people can raise money on their property - potentially allowing them to afford to stay in their homes for the rest of their lives. Get it wrong and they can accumulate an enormous debt and effectively disinherit their children as the finance company claims their home in order to repay the accumulated loan when they die. The link below may help you decide whether this might be a useful route to go down. However just as importantly consider using a financial adviser.
This is a simple AgeUK Equity Release calculator which will help you find out how much an equity release loan would allow you to raise on your house.

Independent Financial Advisers - IFAs Glasgow

Farrell Financial Planning Ltd

19 Danes Dr, Glasgow G14 9HZ, UK – 0141 570 0302

I went to FFP for guidance with what to do with a pension that I had maturing, Joe looked into it, gave me great advice, after a meeting and several phone calls and him emailing to my pension provider Prudential. He didn't try to sell me anything, where as the Prudential advisor tried to sell me on something else. Joe even got me a £100 check from them for wrongful advice and withholding information. Amazing work Joe, thanks again. Namaste

I was really impressed by Joe's depth of knowledge of the world of finance and he continually provides me with great advice that maximises the return on my investment. He is extremely personable and manages to explain complicated processes in an extremely easy to understand manner. I would have no problem in recommending Joe at Farrell Financial Planning to anyone looking for good, sound and honest financial advice.

Prosperity Financial Solutions

Maria has been my Financial Advisor for over 25 years. She is extremely knowledgeable and professional but is also pragmatic and realistic. I have recommended her to friends and family and they have also been delighted with the service that they’ve received. Maria will always go the extra mile the level of service that she and her team give is exemplary. I would recommend her wholeheartedly. Louise Laidlaw

I got to know about Prosperity a few years ago when Maria Saunders came to my workplace to give advice regarding my works pension...felt so confident with the advice given I asked her to my home to look over my husband's pension. We have never looked back the advice and support Maria and her colleagues give us means we have peace of mind in knowing we have a portfolio which will help us in the future when retirement comes around.

Independent Mortgage Store

93 Byres Rd, Glasgow G11 5HW, UK – 0141 337 3393

Gerry provided a phenomenal service. He was incredibly helpful at every step of the process and when we were having problems with the lender late on that almost delayed the purchase Gerry stepped in and spoke to the lender to sort everything out. I would highly recommend and will certainly be going back here when it is time to remortgage.

I have used The Independent Mortgage Store for 20 years and recommended to many friends over the years! Paul's depth of knowledge is exceptional and his friendly nature always makes things easier. Laura is a credit to the company and again, very pleasant to deal with. I would never go anywhere else.

Mortgage Brokers

Mortgage Advice Brokerage Ltd

730 Dumbarton Rd, Glasgow G11 6RD, UK – 0141 339 9034

I have been using Richard for a number of years now and have always found him to be quick, efficient, knowledgeable, professional and always willing to go the extra mile no matter the time or day. He proved his talents by obtaining me a mortgage offer in less then 2 weeks as i was working to a deadline, and he pulled it off miraculously . I have been in the industry for 19 years now and i would always recommend him.

Professional service from start to finish. Our mortgage adviser, David MacLennan, was friendly, thorough and very professional throughout the full process. He discussed the different options with us, explained everything very clearly, and kept us informed as our application progressed. As first time buyers, his knowledge was very useful to us and helped us to understand everything as we went along. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone looking for any mortgage advice.

First Mortgage

280-282 Dumbarton Rd, Glasgow G11 6TD, UK – 0141 406 6616

WOW! Amazing service from my initial enquiry all the way through to mortgage acceptance and aftercare. Can't recommend First Mortgage enough! It's not often you get outstanding service these day, so thank you Paul and Scott for making this entire process as easy as possible. One very happy client :)

Paul and Scott sorted out my mortgage application. The level of communication and involvement was excellent, despite having many problems and hold ups from the bank themselves. They work to keep you informed every step of the way and make sure the process is done in a timely manner as much as possible.

Mortgage Brokers - Key Questions

How much do mortgage brokers charge?
Typically, a broker will actually be paid around 0.35% of the mortgage loan as commission from your the lender. So, for every £100,000 borrowed, they would receive £700 in commission - if they are on commission. Many will therefore not charge for their advise if they are. However they maybe tied to specific companies and so may not be able to offer the best deal. Start with your bank. They will know you personally and financially - hopefully! They will tell you about their mortgages and you can use them as a base line to compare products found by mortgage brokers around Glasgow.

Is it better to get mortgage from bank or broker?
This question will be answered by this initial mortgage research. You may hit it lucky and find that your bank can give you the best deal - but do check with a mortgage broker first.

How do I find a good mortgage broker?
Don't write off the financial comparison websites. Moneysupermarket is full of good advise on how to find mortgage brokers and may even be able to point you around Knightswood Secondary School that they particularly recommend - although will be on commission themselves! Click the link below to go the the right part of Moneysupermarket.

Are mortgage brokers worth it?
Probably yes and we are not on commission! You are free to the these ones a ring - it could really worth it.
